Political participation doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be something as simple as making sure you are registered to vote. It’s important that we remain active citizens within our democracy, whether it is on a national, state, or local level. Over the years, being a Girl Scout has taught me to be an agent of change, and you can be one too!

  • I donated the Walking Pink Art Exhibit: Women in Politics to the History department at Edison Highschool to be used for educational purpose.

  • My favorite female figure featured in the exhibit is Margaret Chase Smith because she passed key legislation that allowed women to be recognized as service members and have the same benefits as their male counter parts within the military. As a young women in the military, it is important to me that I will be given the same treatment as other male servicemen. Another female figure that is my favorite is Gloria Steinem. Prior to the exhibit, I completed a homework assignment on her in the 10th grade and through my research I learned that she was heavily criticized. Naysayers would say she wasn’t serious about politics simply because she was attractive. Women being criticized for their appearance is one of the many reason why we don’t see a lot of women leadership in politics today. Despite the criticism she faced, Gloria didn’t stop sharing her passion for various political issues. Criticism about appearance is a reason why I wanted to create this exhibit, to reframe negative remarks and highlight the accomplishments of those who came before us. Unfortunately, Gloria passed on September 2, 2026.

  • The first challenge I faced during the process was managing my personal life and attempting to prioritize the project. At the time I was approved for the Gold Award Ap Exams, Prom, Graduation, and Vacation was coming up.

    The second challenge I faced was trying to find a local artist to help my vision come alive. Since I was vacation in St. Luica, I began looking for looking artist which took a lot of messaging, emailing, calling, and asking around. Eventually, I found Zwena Edwards, who was able to paint all 21 portraits for me!

    The third challenge I faced was finding specific information of the different figures included within the exhibit. When doing research, I sometimes struggled to find information on what legislations. bills, acts etc that were passed due to the efforts of that figure, which is a testament to the poor documentation of women and the specific affairs they handled within their political career.

  • I want people to become aware of the importance of women representation in politics. The women featured in the exhibit and many more throughout history pushed and introduced key legislations that protected and benefitted other women during their time. Due to their persistence, we still have those protections today. However it is always up to women to continue to advocate for women, because living in a patriarchy means no one else will.

  • The exhibit is called walking because it is portable. The portraits and biographies are on a 20ft canvas paper than can be easily rolled up and stored away when not in use.
