The Gold Award

A Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award a Girl Scout can receive. Scouts who earn this award receive a gold pin that is designated on the left side of their vest and have an opportunity to win a $5,000 scholarship. To qualify for this award, a scout must be registered as a Senior or Ambassador within the Girl Scouts organization, be a 9th-12th grader, and have completed a Silver Award or 2 Journeys. The Silver Award is the 2nd highest award a scout can receive for girls in grades 6-8; it requires 50 hours of completed work, and it can be completed by a single scout or a group of scouts. Additionally, a Journey is a multi-session experience where Girl Scouts explore their interests through hands-on activities that teach specific skills and encourage them to lead a Take Action project (a sustainable project) with a lasting impact on their communities.

To earn the Gold Award, a scout is required to:

• Identify a problem/issue within her community

• Research/investigate the issue, its root cause, and its global link

• Gather a team of experts to assist with implementing the solution

• Submit project proposal to local Girl Scout council for approval

• Carry out and implement the plan

• Ensure sustainability

• Reflect on the change created and share the story

The Gold Award is also a huge time commitment, requiring a Scout to complete 80+ hours of work toward their project. A Walking Pink Art Exhibit: Women in Politics took $94.89 and 108 hours to complete!
